SB2 - Tell an untold story

PART ONE - Visual Journalist
Week One - Research field trip

WONDER, SPECULATE, TAKE RISKS

RESEARCH FIELD TRIP ONE
PLAN OF ACTION:
I decided to choose charity shops, because I know that there's a lot of them both in Leeds and back at home in London, so would be easy for me to research the topic.
On the first research field trip day I decided to simply go around the Leeds market area and see what I could find, taking photos and drawing.

CRITICAL INCIDENT
When I was walking around, it quite hard to find charity shops, but came across 'vintage' shops very easily. This made me think, is there a takeover of vintage shops? When I was looking in these vintage shops I was thinking that they've basically taken the 'good stuff' from charity shops and added another £30 to what the price should be. So I decided that I should look further into this, as I can't be the only one that has recognised this.
I was looking up the reviews on the well known vintage shop 'Blue Rinse' and compared them to 'The British Heart Foundation' and found that there were mixed reviews about BR, some saying it was too expensive and terribly quality and others saying what good value it is. But for the BHF it was only positive responses. This again makes me question the uprise in vintage shops, seeing as not everyone seems to be very pleased with them.

I then looked at the kind of patterns that you find in both charity and vintage shops and found them to be very similar. I want to study these patterns more in my work, collecting some materials and coming up with some of my own designs using the ones I find as a resource.

RESEARCH FIELD TRIP TWO
PLAN OF ACTION:
I decided to go to Headingley, because I had been told that there are loads of charity shops there, so I decided to investigate and try to collect some materials/prints. I had also been told in my group feedback that there is a shop (Sue Ryder) that makes itself look like a stylish vintage shop, but is actually just an ordinary charity shop.

This trip didn't make notice anything more about the vintage vs charity shop conflict, but I did collect and see a lot of interesting prints and designs that I can work from, varying in shape and colour.

After having my group feedback session, I realised that I need to add more context to my pattern designs instead of just having a pretty picture, something in the image that shows the conflict between the two types of shops.
