His work is even more risqué than what I have created, minus penis trump maybe.. But this style is something that I really enjoy doing and think that I should really take forward into my final year. I'm not sure if he specifically uses gouache, I tried looking but everything kept coming up in spanish so I didn't get too far. Although, I think it's just the style of Cornella that I enjoy doing, I don't think I would want to create work as controversial as his, even if it is hilarious.

OUIL505 'Woman Card' article
https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/compost/wp/2016/04/27/how-to-play-the-woman-card/
My housemate found this article that I think will be quite useful for my project. It's about how Trump has slated Hillary Clinton for only getting votes because she plays the 'woman card'. I think I can make this link to my drawing of 'lady trump', maybe but the quote in the information?

OUIL505 Distribution rethink
At the start of my project I was planning on just focusing on editorial - newspapers, magazines. So my distributors were people such as The New Yorker, The Guardian. But now my project has morphed into merchandise, I think I need to have a little rethink in my distribution. I think I can still keep the newspapers, as my illustrations can still be used in an editorial context. But now I can open my audience to shops. I found that 4Chan has it own satire fan shop:
http://www.shapeways.com/shops/4chan
This made me think that I probably have enough physical things that I could apply my illustrations onto to produce my own online shop, that I could (as one of my options) sell my work on. This is a bit over ambitious, but I don't think it's too silly an option.

OUIL505 Application rethink
I'd obviously already thought about the application for my product, but I think I really need to push the boat out on this one. I think it definitely helps that I've based my work on the election, because this already gives me lists of merchandise that I can put my illustrations onto! I've had a rethink and thought of everything that I should do
I also had a look on Trump's merchandise that he has on his official website to see if there was anything else that I could include
>trump cards
>stickers
>t-shirts/hoodies
>badges
>hats
>massive foam hand?
>leaflets
>posters
>billboards??
>newspapers/editorial
>magazines
>protest sign/picketing
>action figures/collectables
>tote bags
>flags
>cups
I also want to physically make as many as possible, which might be a bit too ambitious. But I think things like stickers and badges can definitely be manageable, and I'm also having my cards made too.

OUIL505 Back to work
I had to put this module on a slight pause due to the overload of 501 running straight at me, which I hated because this is my favourite module and 501 was just, well it was 501. Anyway, at least having my tutorial I do feel really confident about this project. I know exactly what my next stages are and by having my print slot on Wednesday, it has given my a deadline to work to which is how I work best. I just need to finish my paintings and put it all together which I am really excited about!

OUIL505 Packaging Day 2 - Research
After the feedback, I went back to the layout of my box. I was a bit stuck of what information needs to go on it, so I had a google:
I found it surprisingly hard to find packaging that showed the back as well as the front, but luckily I found these two. The Simpson's top trumps were useful, as it showed what goes on the back of a normal top trumps packet. And the Cards against humanity was also a good find because it's a satirical card game like mine, so took a spin on what a normal pack of cards would have on the back.
I'm also glad I found this, because it will help me think about my distribution of my own cards! So I looked to see where they sell them. I found out that it's mainly online like Amazon and eBay, as well as having their own online shop. I went on their online shop to see if they sell anything else other than the cards to see if this could help with my own application. But the only thing they sell that isn't the original pack of cards themselves are expansion packs, so annoyingly it wasn't that useful for me.
OUIL505 Test & Peer review feedback
I printed out what I already had (obviously the design isn't finished yet) just to see if it worked and everything was in the right dimensions.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXvxvGAZlWMPnoQwOQjzq7jb2KtrP9LXNd2E6fgVamm9eFymCva1Z-135qx-SYPzLOdmLaOLYKazAttqhCgB5CBJZVD4d2o9FNLIQm14wYU9lmSl24Mp-Qpo6gq-V0sWBpXlkddLyooW4/s320/13140786_10209877017348503_1541787455_n.jpg)
I brought it along to my group crit to see what I needed to change and to give me some pointers for what I could do for my design.
Feedback (for the box)
>Add Trump's face onto the top trumps box
>Keep images a consistent quality
>Maybe make the colours brighter on the box
Feedback (for the cards)
>Keep images a consistent quality
>Work on the illustrations for the cards
>Figure out compositions - try not to focus too much on the text - more on the illustrations
I found this crit really useful, as I wasn't too sure what to do for my packaging. I'm going to experiment with designing the front of the box and need to think about what I'm going to do for my cards.

OUIL505 Existing Trump cards
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5tj04VOH2dkAjmnI2q5ifo6EHQtm0qRBXAMqfNLlx_GI8fEkzDhRp7muf6Q1tEUGlwHVqqAQCdvBoEC56mW1DCGm-TwVmvPb8anJ1gGanDMmhEKb2X8SzOGETwJu1IQoBPlQfsW0zJeA/s400/Screen+Shot+2016-04-17+at+18.27.37.png)
I was curious to see if people had already made Trump top trumps and if so, how they laid out the cards. I did find on google that people had made them, but very badly on what looks like paint, so I don't really think I have any competition, which is good! It means that there's definitely a gap in the market for my product.

OUIL505 - Packaging - Day 1
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuGuit3UKon6xnkqNAo02hvheAfGusExkG2tT6msE4FJ7MUB5XzsaZZ0Ur-6SxvVVcs0AKJKlIdChhx6WOLMO2bu3bKP26dZQ93zcF688HGyOIkDZUA8nZedkZBuYktDt-cSq9PmVH6p4/s400/Screen+Shot+2016-04-17+at+17.50.04.png)
After looking at existing products, I've started designing the box for my cards. I used to net that I made and the Top trumps logo that I made myself in illustrator (because I couldn't find the type face anywhere). I came up with the idea of using the same colours from his campaign and the similar layout for my own packaging design. This will make it more obvious that I'm taking his campaign and making a joke out of it. It also makes the whole context more relevant by using the same colours and type.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3fRD7FUeAd4Zn1eOBI92onn1XLavsTSi2d_-WDFtD0pttK79XKBmaiwusnf2yKGT5MTVIZfM7F9wGp-WKkx11IeSeqJgsatmY8ytcq1g0Ezu-PL8Erex-SWhSUZn3m31X1CqEcN84xdU/s400/Screen+Shot+2016-04-17+at+18.23.42.png)
Now I've got the basic look of my box, I'm hoping that everything else will fall into place!
OUIL505 Card layout??

After researching different card layouts, I started designing formats for my own cards (front and back). This is really important, because I need my illustration to be the main focus of the cards as well as having them look aesthetically pleasing. I'm not too worried about the back of the cards because they're all going to look the same, but all of the fronts aren't because all my illustrations are different shapes and not all of them (the ones I have so far) have backgrounds. I think if I make the back of the card pretty much the same as the front of the packaging, then this would save me a lot of time...
So I think I'll do the packaging first.
OUIL505 Top Trumps Cards Layout Research SB2
I really don't want my cards to look like they're obviously hand made by myself, so wanted to see the different layouts that already exist.
I picked a large variety to look at and saw that they don't all follow the same layout design. This is good for me as this means that I can have fun with creating my own compositions for my cards. But I suppose it also means that I have more to think about rather than following the standard template. They also range a lot in terms of content, as others have extra images in the card design, and some just have a square with the person/object inside. Or, I might do it like some of the other cards, and have the image as the whole card/background, as having an image in a square is a bit basic.

Although I had found the template from someone else's blog, I didn't feel comfortable using it, especially if it wasn't accurate anyway. So I found a pack of cards in my room and opened up the box to see how the net works, so I'm going to use this as my template instead. Although, top trump cards is more of a rectangular shape, so I'm going to have to adapt this.
My template turned out a little different to this first one I found, so just to make sure I'm going to go to the software workshop tomorrow to see if this is correct, even though it's the same as existing packaging. I also need to work out the sizes too, I made it on A4 so shouldn't be too hard to work it out.

Luckily, I had a lot more success with finding out the type for Trump's campaign logo and slogan. This I think I'm going to use for my trump cards as it's more relevant than choosing a random font that looks nice. Plus on top trump cards all of the type that provides the information is different for each pack of cards, so there isn't a specific system to them.
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUJFEcMomYbedMwyUpz_EWG-GXKc5IOPTNtgiKmTqSft3XiJdwY3vwKl99CLL9I7co3-s2EMg8VmyXuKsaoobFy5M0L7hmzM_hY_mb8MI5PCUnWBb7Szo2XriR7GSVUvYDySVWg-RJ3nA/s320/Screen+Shot+2016-04-17+at+13.50.28.png)
Now I have to work out how to get these fonts...
OUIL505 Top Trumps Type desperation SB2
I was desperately trying to find the font that the Top Trumps cards are written in, and I can't find it anywhere so it's stressing me out! BUT when I googled Top Trumps font and scrolled down, I found a third years blog from graphic design that had made a fine art top trumps set!! I feel like this is cheating, but I looked through how they approached it and it's helped a lot. They've put their net on the blog and I really don't want to just copy it because it's not fair, but it's the perfect template!!?!?!
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2GBTVB_QwluOVeDu_0EzOqs-ySh2uRF2AvZBfuzYFu4XCsBK9E43zk4Wzc6ndsiA6DQi66A5UHJcRvWJFfP75uFrJYJlRwOOAuPfwangxITTzhjUCaJnFvRGZYGVkYzH01q24c2hl5sE/s400/Screen+Shot+2016-04-17+at+13.39.40.png)
This is the template. I think that I should use this as a guide and not a direct copy, to help me with my own net. It might not even be right anyway!
I am very glad that I found this guys blog, even if I still haven't found the right font yet, at least I found something useful!

OUIL505 - Top Trumps Research
I think I need to look at Top Trumps itself and see the background of the company before I start designing my cards.

I found the core bits of information about the company, which honestly isn't that useful to how my product is going to look like, but it's always good to know. But I also found what other merchandise they usually sell with Top Trumps which may be helpful to my application later on. Although it isn't really much, it's mostly different types of plastic holder that the cards sometimes come in. This is something that I can't physically make, although I can propose it. Apart from that, it says pens and mugs which I think is definitely possible in mocking up.
This research led into look at type face (explained in next blog post)

OUIL503 Evaluation
When first briefed on this module, I was quite excited. It was a chance for all of us to showcase our work to the creative world. It’s also a great opportunity to use it as a method of deciding what industry that we would be interested in working in, as you can pick and choose what kind of briefs you would like to tackle. I also was looking forward to the collaboration sector of the module, working with people from other courses, learning new skills that I can take into my own practice.
Again it’s also a way of experiencing what it will be like in the real creative world, as it is most likely that we would be working with others such as graphic designers.
After finishing the module, I feel relieved and slightly deflated. I struggled a lot with making my work look professional and coming up with unique ideas relatively quickly. I think I would have enjoyed this module more if it was the only one that I had to work on, so I could focus all my effort into it.
But it was not all doom and gloom, I did learn that I have talents in quite a range of different illustrative areas, realising that I am quite versatile. I also gained new skills from collaborating with graphic designers, being introduced with the importance of type and how to create mock ups of your work online. I also learnt that it is also important to not go into a brief with something in mind straight away as I quickly learnt that that way creates generic and usually all round terrible outcomes. The use of development and roughs is key.
I think my strengths that I showed throughout this module was my approach to time management. I made sure that I chose briefs that weren’t due until March so I had enough time in my first term to focus mainly on 504. This worked really well for me, as it meant I had a comfortable amount of time in January to February to do my small briefs. This also reduced my stress levels which is always a bonus. Another strength I think I showed during this module is my willingness to try new things, in terms of material as well as the type of brief. I think it is the most evident in my fashion illustration brief, as the brief and style I was given was completely out of my comfort zone. But instead of giving up, I tackled it heads first and ended up producing something that I’m actually quite proud of. This made me realise that living in a creative bubble and being stubborn doesn’t really get you anywhere.
Although, if I were to do this module again, I would have spent more time on the development of each of my outcomes. Even though I did rough out a few different ideas, I think that I should have taken it a bit further, really pushing out every possibility I could have produced. As I previously stated, I would have also liked my work to look slightly more professional, as I think some of my designs weren’t clear enough and some were messy. I think that because of this my secret 7 designs were not as successful as what they could have been. But I’ll definitely take these factors into account for my next modules so I can improve.
Overall, I think this module is very important. You learn more about your practice as well as other people’s, as well as finding yourself producing work to a professional level that you may have never thought you could do. Most importantly, it has given me a lot of confidence for the future. Also I think due the nature of the module, it being such a different structure to the others, breaks the same old routine of sketchbook, blog, evaluation. In a weird way, the difference brings something new and interesting which for me, made the module more enjoyable.
OUIL505 Gerald Scarfe
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-LDBK6UwoCp9c9U1iRw422rYlymgFebSC9Yp0SOf1RbqUNCfRmMgX7RhMadGDojsLj0O-L1l1MmPt4t2-kTEuTKW-WaEm9RphKNjExyCU_ePQ-d77dg-zji59Bw5CbzjIMe-JFGtzAbg/s400/eventsscarfebig.jpg)
In the peer crit, someone told me to look at the satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe. I've never heard of him before so thought I should have a look. Even though I think his work is amazing and depicts his characters so clearly, I think his work is very political cartoonist. I think it's a kind of style that has been done before, all the ones in newspapers such as the Private Eye are very similar to this.
This has made me think a bit. If I can make satirical political work but not just copy this sketchy style, do my own gouache style, then that is a gap in the market. This could be something that I could look into for the future. I know from looking at newspapers earlier in the module that they definitely don't have the kind of work that I do, very exciting.

OUIL505 Feedback after easter
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNJTwj6A3clOk7nuf0yc5fxEIPqxTTekXYt_cXSaiH2VRznEmx2-A1fWVKxMGpZtgOKdx217iqPywZ510sLj1KSyGakFJkNRJU4WpmbNdunXCGyZx1qqy6NaQm8ynckaLgp1SxxjeKg8Q/s400/feedback2.jpg)
It was interesting to see what everyone else has produced after the easter holidays, I like how everyone has such different ideas and seeing how they're coming together. But, the thing I don't like about megacrit, is that you can't explain your work to people. I know the work should speak for itself, but sometimes people don't read your sketchbook and give suggestions to ideas that aren't really relevant anymore. Because of this I find having peer crits far more useful, as people have a clearer idea of what you're doing and usually give better feedback too.
