Here is a low quality version of my final design for my Mexican book!! I actually can't believe I managed to do it really. It might not seem like a big deal, but from being the kind of illustrator who can only draw spot illustrations in a 20x20cm box to this is absolutely huge for me!!! It isn't perfect by any means, but to me this is a great achievement and even if it goes to shit after I painted it at least I tried to push my skills and I'm happy with just that.
I'm also happy with the amount and the range of references that I managed to put in, and a lot of them aren't in the stereotypical way - no sombrero in sight. I also did day of the dead quite low key, by just drawing one of mum's alters that she had made for the festival one year instead of doing loads of catrina skulls. The purpose of this is to educate people about Mexico, that it isn't just tequila and Frida, and honestly I think I've been very successful with just that! There's a lot of different subject matters so anyone can find something that they're interested in and would want to find out more about.
I also thought it would be fitting to draw my mum in the big illustration, seeing as I wouldn't be doing this for my fmp if it wasn't for her. I decided to draw her with the thing that mum loves...
... her MOLCAJETE (aka pestle and mortar)
(Translation: It's incredible the amount you can draw with one pencil)
Also after finishing my big drawing I showed my mum and she replied with this image from her favourite comic from her childhood - Mafalda. It's funny because obviously the cartoon strip isn't meant to be life changing or particularly deep, but it did actually make me think wow I managed to do all of that with just one pencil, it's interesting when you think about it like that, well to me anyway.
